Skin cancer excision
Skin cancer excision is a procedure to remove an area of skin affected by cancer in order to prevent further growth or spread. This may be indicated following a biopsy-confirmed diagnosis or based on appearance alone. We offer expertise in all types of skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, merkle cell carcinoma and melanoma.
Surgery involves excising the cancer with a margin of healthy tissue to ensure complete removal, and the wound is then closed directly or with a local flap or graft depending on the size and location. The excised tissue will be sent for histological examination to confirm clear margins and whilst excision of the whole lesion is always the priority, we will take great care to ensure that your final aesthetic result is optimised. Most procedures can be carried out under local anaesthetic as daycase surgery but we will discuss your particular needs and together determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
A follow up consultation soon after your surgery will enable us to discuss whether any further treatment or follow up is necessary with onward referral made within our multi-disciplinary team where necessary.
