breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a procedure to restore the shape and volume of your breast(s) following mastectomy or, in some cases, significant breast tissue loss. The aim is to recreate a natural-looking breast shape, which can help improve body image, restore symmetry, and support emotional recovery after breast cancer treatment or risk-reducing surgery. Reconstruction may be performed at the same time as mastectomy or at a later stage, depending on your individual treatment plan.

Surgery can be broadly subdivided into implant-based approaches and autologous approaches, which uses your own tissue to form a new breast mound, offering a more natural look and feel. If needed, further procedures such as nipple reconstruction, areolar tattooing, or surgery to the opposite breast can help achieve symmetry.

There are many factors at play when considering breast reconstruction. Careful discussion, tailored to your individual circumstances will ensure all options are considered. You will be supported by a breast nurse specialist and resources including the Oxford Breast Reconstruction Awareness Group.
