Sentinel lymph node biopsy
Sentinel lymph node biopsy is a procedure used to identify and remove the first lymph node(s) that drain lymph fluid from a cancerous area—such as melanoma. This procedure helps determine whether cancer has spread beyond the original site. It involves injecting a small amount of dye and/or radioactive tracer near the tumour site, which travels to the sentinel node(s). These nodes are then surgically removed and sent for histological examination to check for cancer cells. If the sentinel node(s) are free of cancer, further treatment (surgical or medical) may be avoided.
This is usually a day-case procedure and is generally combined with a wider excision of your melanoma scar. We will discuss any further treatment or follow-up based on the results of this biopsy and your overall cancer management plan.
