breast Asymmetry
Breast asymmetry, or unevenness in breast size, shape and nipple position is a common occurrence and whilst it's not normally a cause for concern, significant asymmetry should be evaluated to exclude breast cancer. Asymmetry of the chest wall may be present from birth with conditions such as Poland's syndrome, pectus excavatum and multiple or absent nipple areolar complexes. It may also become evident during adolescent breast development where one breast may take on a different size, shape or position to the other such as with developemental hypoplasia, tuberous breast or gigantomastia. Lastly, breast asymmetry can develop later in life due to hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, surgery, or trauma. This asymmetry can cause physical discomfort, difficulty with clothing fit, or a sense of imbalance in your appearance.
An initial thorough assessment will determine which breast is your preferred breast and what options exist to correct the asymmetry to match your preferred breast. Surgery, if appropriate, is tailored to your individual needs and may involve reduction, augmentation, mastopexy or liposculpture to reshape one or both breasts to achieve a more symmetrical result.
