BREAST ENLARGEMENT
Breast augmentation is a procedure to increase the volume of your breast(s) and enhance their shape, often helping to restore confidence and body image. Common reasons for choosing this surgery include naturally small breasts, loss of volume after pregnancy or weight loss, asymmetry between the breasts, congenital irregularities such as pectus excavatum (indented chest) or a desire for better proportion in clothing.
Surgery involves the placement of implants—either silicone or saline—beneath the breast tissue or chest muscle to achieve the desired size and contour. In certain suitable individuals, breast augmentation can also be performed by liposculpture (fat transfer or fat filling) and the procedure can be combined with a breast uplift (mastopexy) if there is significant drooping (ptosis) of the breast.
Breast cancer screening can be carried out with implants in place but if you are eligible for NHS breast screening (age 50–70), we recommend that you have a normal mammogram result within the year preceding your surgery. This can be arranged for you as part of your preparation if desired. All aspects of surgery will be discussed with you during your consultations and for added peace of mind, your implant data will be added to the national implant database unless you choose to opt out.
